This past July, HathiTrust introduced its new HathiTrust Help Center (not to be confused with the UC Libraries HathiTrust Help Center) as part of a larger website redesign. The HathiTrust Help Center includes a support ticketing system alongside a growing set of articles about how to use the HathiTrust Digital Library. The ticketing system boasts three support portals:
- General Support (for general questions),
- Catalog Quality (for questions about copyright status and how to report incorrect metadata)
- Content Quality (for reporting missing pages and illegible scans)
To access the support articles, you can explore the different portals or simply type a keyword or phrase into the search box and check the results. Alternatively, you can start with How do I use the HathiTrust Help Center?
HathiTrust’s Help Center ticketing system is powered by the HathiTrust User Support Team, a well organized and dedicated group of over 30 staff members from HathiTrust member institutions, headed by HathiTrust’s own Val Waldron and Graham Dethmers. They are prepared to respond to any and all questions about HathiTrust.
To summarize, at the HathiTrust Help Center you can:
- Learn how to use the HathiTrust Digital Library and other HathiTrust services
- Report an issue with catalog and/or scan quality
- Ask questions about anything and everything related to HathiTrust
Wait, why are there two HathiTrust Help Centers?
HathiTrust only has one help center, but CDL also has the UC Libraries HathiTrust Help Center intended specifically for our UC Library colleagues who work on, work with, use, or are interested in HathiTrust.
How is the UC Libraries HathiTrust Help Center different from HathiTrust Help Center?
Like HathiTrust’s new Help Center, the UC Libraries HathiTrust Help Center includes a growing set of articles and a support ticketing system. However, articles in the HathiTrust Help Center focus on how to use the HathiTrust Digital Library and other HathiTrust services, whereas articles in the UC Libraries HathiTrust Help Center have a wider focus. Topics include UC’s history and participation in HathiTrust and affiliated digitization projects, related projects and initiatives at UC’s ten campuses and two regional library facilities, and useful information about HathiTrust services of interest to our UC Library colleagues.
The UC Libraries HathiTrust Help Center ticketing system is powered by the Digitization team at CDL (Paul Fogel and Renata Ewing) with additional support as needed from our copyright advisor Katie Fortney and other members of the Publishing, Archives, and Digitization (PAD) team. We are prepared to help with questions specific to UC and HathiTrust: the bibliographic metadata and content quality of UC’s digitized books in HathiTrust and Google Books, UC’s participation in HathiTrust and related digitization projects, and reference and support help regarding UC’s books in HathiTrust, Google Books, and Internet Archive.
To summarize, at the UC Libraries HathiTrust Help Center you can:
- Learn about UC’s participation in and contributions to HathiTrust
- Keep up with HathiTrust developments and events of interest to UC
- Send a UC-HathiTrust-related request, question, or suggestion to CDL’s Digitization team via the ticketing system
- Learn about ways UC Library personnel are involved in HathiTrust (and how you can get involved too!)
- Connect with other UC staff working on and/or using HathiTrust
